Why adults are quietly filling classrooms again or

Ask someone why they're going back to school this year, and the honest answer is starting to change. New data on adult learners puts personal fulfillment at 51 percent as a reason to re-enroll, closing in on higher pay at 64 percent. Almost a third say AI's effect on their industry played a direct role in the decision.

That last number is the interesting one. It's easy to read it as fear: AI is coming for the job, better get ahead of it. But that's not quite what the fulfillment number suggests is happening alongside it. A lot of these are people already enrolled in something real, already doing the reading and the homework, who seem to be using the moment less to defend a career and more to ask what they actually want theirs to be about.

The class teaches the craft. It rarely has room to teach the reason someone signed up for it in the first place. That reason is usually older than the semester, and usually more specific than "get better at this."

If AI is narrowing what counts as safe work, it may also be doing something else at the same time:

Giving people enough reason to stop and ask what they were actually trying to build toward.
